How to Find Your Non-Negotiables When You're Starting Over

Ari came to this session at twenty-seven, starting her life over from the ground up. She was working fifteen-hour days behind a bar, rebuilding after a marriage that was not safe, and working toward the stability that would bring her young daughter home. She also carried more dreams than one season of life could hold: a return to the outreach work she once ran, a nonprofit, a book, the theater and dance she loves, and the family she has wanted since she was a little girl. 

Her angels, along with her father, who came through clearly from the other side, answered with something practical and loving. Stability was her must-have, and every choice in front of her had to meet it. The dreams that could not yet promise a paycheck would wait for their season. Her guides laid out a steady, well-paid role in a cleaner, higher-end setting, a return to school, and a daily practice of clearing her energy. They also named the one pattern that had to come off the table for good, which was giving everything to everyone else and nothing to herself. When in doubt, choose yourself, they said. It will feel selfish, and it is what is required. 

This session is a living illustration of The List, the fifth step of the HEART Method. In The List, you write down your true must-haves and deal-breakers and let them make the decisions your moods would otherwise make for you. The session ends with an elephant from her grandmother's collection and a story her father told her years ago, and the way those two threads met stopped me in my tracks.
