How to Be Your Authentic Self (Safely): Where to Start When You've Been Hiding

Authenticity · Safety · Your Tribe · The Next Right Action

Watch the full message above — the written version below is the short of it.

Learning how to be your authentic self is really an invitation to come out of whatever closet you've been hiding in — mindfully, safely, and with a plan that protects your tender heart.

Being who you really are is the single best way to magnetize the people who are truly your tribe, because anyone paying attention can feel when you bring your genuine self into a conversation. Sharing that self can leave you feeling vulnerable, especially if you're highly sensitive, neurodivergent, or forever dancing with paradox. So the how matters as much as the whether. Here's a gentle way to begin.

✦

One

Start with your people, not the internet

Please don't begin on social media — at least not until you're well practiced. When your genuine self shows up, it becomes clear pretty quickly who actually resonates with you, and social media exposes that tender moment to bots, trolls, and strangers who have no interest in truly knowing you. Begin instead with your most trusted people: the ones who already, or very likely, have the capacity to honor and cherish you exactly as you are. Share the aspects of yourself you feel most confident about first, and let it unfold from there. And a note from experience — sometimes the people who don't receive your true self are your own family of origin. If that's you, my heart goes out to you, and I want you to hear this clearly: there are billions of people out there, and some of them will recognize you as treasure. If you haven't found them yet, keep searching.

Two

If you feel alone, meet your own true self first

If there simply aren't trusted people close by right now, start by getting to know your authentic self more intimately. Mine your inner world through journaling, art, or an automatic writing, drawing, or painting exercise. Open a voice-notes app, close your eyes, drop into a little meditation, and talk for fifteen or twenty minutes, asking a single tender question: what does my authentic self want me to know? You can even practice sharing with a friendly AI, just remembering it's a program and not a person. And above all, dip yourself into nature. Turn off the screens, find a tree, a patch of grass, the desert, the snow — a power place — and ask it to reveal something true about who you are. Then ask the life force, your higher self, your guides, to quiet your mind so you can hear the wise, eternal part of you that already knows.

Three

Ask for the next right action

Whenever you feel tangled in paradox or indecision, there's one steadying question that always moves you forward: what is the next right action? Just the next small, true step — that's the way through. If you're a planner by nature, as I am, you might find real comfort in mapping the next ten, five, three, two, and one years across the areas of your life, so you know your choices are aligned with what you actually want. Those plans will shift as you discover more about your own capacity, and that's exactly right. And if you're in a season with little control — young, or simply hemmed in by circumstance — then plan out to the point in the future where your choices open up, and aim your attention there.

There are billions of people out there, and some of them will know you're treasure. If you haven't found them yet, keep searching.

And if you're not yet fluent in hearing that inner whisper, please know you can learn. With a little practice quieting your mind, and some help from your guides, you'll begin to catch it — as inspiration, as feeling, sometimes as an actual voice, sometimes in the way nature or a stranger's words seem to answer you. The life force is always reaching for you, in whatever way you can perceive, to remind you that you are loved and worthy of the dreams you hold for yourself.
