Why I Finally Wrote the Book: Behind the Scenes of Becoming an Author
Why I Finally Wrote the Book: Behind the Scenes of Becoming an Author
Love is conspiring on our behalf all the time, and our whole job is to meet it at the intersection. This week the show turns behind the scenes, so that you can see what it is like from my side to be a psychic, a medium, and now an author. The only reason I share any of this is so that it helps you, and the people you know and love, make your own dreams come true, because I believe the deepest purpose of every one of us is to share with the world the absolutely unique co-creation that each of us is. I keep reminding myself that I am still here, with so much more flow and inspiration arriving in new creative projects, new directions, new people to love, and new adventures to have.
One
The book is complete
The book is complete, and it has a title, How Your Dream Comes True: A Psychic’s Guide to Getting What You’ve Always Wanted. It tells my story of working in the psychic world and of failing miserably at finding true love for decades, until I hit upon a practical system that kept me true to love’s calling and kept my attention pointed at what I was after. In my case the dream was true love, and the system works for any dream.
The dream doesn’t need more faith. It needs a plan.
The book has been proofread and is now in the hands of the cover designer, and any day now I will receive the first drafts of the cover, which I am happy to share with you as they arrive. The upcoming book publishes this November, in print and as an audiobook.
Two
The dream that won’t leave me alone
Discerning the deepest, truest dream is challenging when your interests flow from thing to thing to thing, as a renaissance kind of person’s do. That is why the first chapter of the book is a deep dive into honesty, into which dream you ought to be pointing your attention toward. For me, at one time, it was true love. Now it is writing these books and becoming an author, and it is so exciting and so challenging, because the dream that has always been mine feels very vulnerable as it bubbles up. I worry about being misperceived, and I care deeply about presenting these ideas and experiences in a way that is useful to you and shares joy.
Three
What held me back
I was an English major and spent many years as a master teacher of reading and literature, and my great frustration with great literature was how it so often presented the experience of being human as tragic. I have certainly had my share of great pain, and I have an ocean of experience with sadness, anger, and rage, and when I lean into other voices through the books I read, I want to be buoyed rather than led back through the dark corners of pain. That held me back from writing and publishing, because we so often relate to one another through our pain, and I was unsure how to navigate that.
What I wanted to offer were stories that show how love keeps showing up for us. The life force itself, which I call the Love-Light, wraps itself around us and recharges us, and we know it keeps showing up because we wake up every day. It keeps trying to help us relax, love ourselves, forgive ourselves, and recognize the astonishing magnificence of everything we are.
Four
Fiction feels like channeling
I also write fiction, and it comes more easily to me because it is so much like channeling. When I connect with a client, I put myself in that person’s field, or in the field of a deceased loved one, and perceive what they are communicating. When I write fiction, I tune into the character, the place, or the emotion that wants to come through, and I write from there.
This nonfiction book was a different climb. It is self-help and inspiration with a memoir quality, and it holds client stories alongside my own. Writing the raw stories was the easier part, and turning them into conversational versions that illustrate the method was profoundly challenging. My editor, who was right, kept compelling me to dig and dig until the stories became relatable enough to affect other people, because the method is no good if nobody uses it. The HEART Method is simple and easy to start, and it can be emotionally challenging to hold yourself to, and writing this book has been exactly that experience for me.
Five
Why I chose to share these stories
I have written for my entire life for my own pleasure, and I came to see that I wanted to share these stories, this magic, and my experiences of glorious, fantastical love and adventure while I am here to share them. My husband and my close tribe benefit from them, and the whole point of writing, for me, is to channel the magic of love into story that gives you hope and faith in yourself and in your own story. I have never had as much fun in my life as I have had in these nine months of becoming an author. I co-wrote a book years ago, and this is my first solo project.
I truly believe that everyone can tune in to love and to the messages that want to come through from other people and from love itself, some of us more easily than others, and all of us more than we imagine. My hope is that something here sparks in you the courage and the joy to lean into the resistance and move through the difficult parts of writing your own book, creating your own art, sharing your creations, or finding love.
Tell me what you are creating
Please share what you are working on, what you are playing with, and what you are loving and pointing your attention toward. I will keep sharing my side of the journey, and together we can weave a more magical tapestry of love, beauty, and joy that washes over everyone.
