How to Find Your True Love Match: Know Your Worth and Cast a Wide Net
How to Find Your True Love Match: Know Your Worth and Cast a Wide Net
The shifts that turned years of bad dates into real love.
I spent decades on bad dates. Worse relationships. Years of trying and struggling and aching for real love, for genuine romance, for my right partner, and coming up empty. Eventually I found the few things that turned it around, wrote a book about the long hard road and the shift at the end of it, and within about six weeks of actually doing them, I met my husband, and several other genuinely wonderful people besides. So here is what changed it.
One
Know Your Worth, and Make Your Own List
Start by taking real care of yourself, and by getting honest about your worth, your strengths, what you actually bring to a partnership. This matters most for the people who tend to forget it: women, highly sensitive souls, anyone coming off a relationship that failed or a run of dates that went nowhere, anyone not feeling quite full in themselves. Most of us make a list of what we want in a partner. Make the other list too, the one about you. What do you offer? What are you willing to bring and to share? What are you good at? You will never hand this list to anyone. It is a private thing, and it is also a kind of cheat sheet, because dates are awkward, and if you are shy or introverted or not inclined to talk about yourself, it helps to already know what you would say. We only ever know what we show each other. So show them what you value, what you care about, and the particular magic that only you bring.
Two
Start Now, Today
Start now. Not tomorrow, not when you feel ready, now. When you feel the nudge, the longing, the small internal call to go find love, that is the moment to move, and the move can be tiny. One minute of one thing. Pick something that plays to your strengths, not the part that scares you, and do it today. You are just moving your story forward, by whatever small amount you can manage, and that is enough.
You are not looking for the one. You are looking for one of the many who could be right for you.
Three
You Are Not Looking for Just One
You need one person in the end, yes, one right partner. But you are not looking for the one, as if there were a single needle hidden in the whole world. There are many people who could be a wonderful match for you, dozens, maybe far more, each of them out there living their own life. Some of them you will meet and feel that strange, immediate familiarity, a sense that you have always known them. I call those people soul tribe. That knowing is real, and it is worth paying attention to, because it often marks a genuine connection. But hear this clearly: the deep knowing is a signal, not a verdict. Sometimes the connection is there to teach you something, and the person is not a good partner at all. So let the recognition point you, and then check it against everything you actually need, the practical and the spiritual both. Watch for the nudges from the great mystery, your guides, the life force, and then test them in the daylight.
Four
Cast the Widest Net You Can
Then cast the widest net you can. Meet more people, and more different people, online and in person, out past your town and your usual little circles. Go with curiosity, as a student of other people, and become a genuinely good listener, someone who wants to find out what makes each person magic. You do not have to lead with yourself; you already have your list for when they ask. The wider you cast, the more the current begins to carry you. Think of floating a gentle stretch of river, where the rocks quietly steer your little boat along a certain path. The life force does that for you when you work with it, guiding you toward better and better situations, and toward more than one person, any of whom could be the one who stays. And remember, the person you are looking for is out there looking for you, going through their own rejections and their own hard road, so be gentle, with yourself and with them, and meet their humanity with your own.
Five
Filter Early, and Free the Ones Who Aren't Yours
Finally, filter, and do it early and honestly. Before you agree to a date, learn as much as you reasonably can, by phone, by text, on the app, however you do it, even to the point where the questions feel a little too nosy, so you know this person actually meets the criteria you care about. There are no prizes for going on more dates. The prize is meeting many people and sorting them quickly. If you love dating, wonderful, go. But if dating costs you, if you are sensitive and it takes something out of you to put yourself out there, then spare yourself, and do not go out with anyone who does not already meet your real criteria. Early on is not the time to make it work. It is the time to say, kindly, thank you, you are not my match, and I wish you well in finding yours. That is not cruelty. Freeing someone to go find their real person is one of the most generous things you can do, and staying in a mismatch hoping they will change is a fool's errand, because people do not change on the things that are fundamental to you.
That is the whole of it. Know your worth, start today, cast wide, trust the nudges, and filter with honesty and kindness. Your person is out there, and they are looking for you too.
