The singular quest of our lives is to be uniquely and beautifully who we are — which is surprisingly hard in a world that trains us, from the very beginning, to mimic everyone around us.
We're raised to copy our parents, our peers, and the thin, curated slices of other people we scroll past all day. Getting along matters, of course; community asks for a little decorum and care. But somewhere in all that mirroring, it gets genuinely hard to feel where you end and the inherited patterns begin. So let's gently find the way back to who you really are, beneath the conditioning.
One
Notice when you're running someone else's program
Have you ever caught yourself saying or doing something, and later thought, I don't actually believe that — that isn't who I am? In those moments you can almost feel it: you were running someone else's program, an inherited pattern or a stray emotion drifting through the culture that briefly took you over. Think of the angry text fired off in a spike of upset, so out of step with the person you are at your core. That flicker of recognition is precious, because you can't come home to yourself until you notice when you've wandered off into a borrowed reality.
Two
Clear the noise and drop beneath it
Give yourself the gift of time and space to clear the noise from your energy field, in whatever way you love most — dance, movement, any practice that gets stuck emotion moving. As it moves, let go of the tethers and energy signatures of other people, whether you met them yesterday or inherited them from ancestors long gone. It was never your responsibility to carry forward anyone else's program. Once the field feels clearer, find your way into your heart center, down beneath thought and emotion, to the still place that remains when everything else falls away. This isn't a thinking exercise — in fact it will drive the mind a little crazy to try — so gently invite the mind to be quiet, and simply feel your way in.
Three
Borrow a new perspective, then reweave yourself
Here's a favorite practice for touching the self beneath all the conditioning. If there's an animal in your life, or a tree, a grove, even a single houseplant you resonate with, borrow its perspective for a few minutes. Gently dislocate from your usual human vantage point and feel into what it's like to be that living being — how it senses, how it rests, how it simply is, beneath thought and beneath training. Then return to yourself and look again: who's there now? As you do this over time, what you find will keep shifting, because you are both particle and wave, utterly unique and always in motion. And that's the freeing part: if you'd like your life to look different, you can take all the threads of who you are and reweave them into a new pattern, so the you who sits in quiet tomorrow is already someone new.
No one in all the billions who've ever lived, or ever will, is exactly who you are right now. That is your genius.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed, lost, or off your path, this is a beautiful few minutes to come home — to remember the particular, unrepeatable, ever-changing configuration of light that is you, and to celebrate the gift of it. And then, however you feel called, to share that gift: with one person, through your art, your words, your community, or simply your presence.
