PREVIEW — What If You're Doing Everything Right?

What If You're Doing Everything Right?

You almost never hear it, and you should hear it every day. Here is what it means, and the whole lineage of people cheering you on.
You are doing everything right. You almost never hear it, and that is its own quiet tragedy, because it is true, and it is true right now. If life has brought you here, wanting more love-filled days and a more love-centered life, then this is the message to let all the way in. You are doing everything right, and it could not be otherwise.
What that means is simple, and steadying. In every moment, you are doing the very best you know how to do, the best you are resourced to do, the best you are capable of doing. Not the best in hindsight. The best you actually had, right then. And there is a whole crowd of people who have never once doubted it.

One

Your Ancestors Are Cheering for You

When I sit with my spirit guides, and especially with the ancestors, this is the first thing that comes through. Your whole lineage is cheering for you. All of them. The grandparents and the aunts and the uncles, the greats and the great-greats and the ones whose names you never learned, all the way back, an enormous cheering section that stretches further than you can see. Whatever those relationships were in life, if you even knew the people at all, that is not the point now. They live in your body. You are, quite literally, them. You carry every one of them with you, and you carry their gifts and their wounds and their unfinished business too, until you are ready to set down whatever no longer serves you. And they are proud of you. They want, more than anything, for you to enjoy being you.

What "Doing Everything Right" Really Means

Here is where it gets hard, because most of us do not look back kindly. When the mind loops over the day, or the week, or the year, it tends to return holding a problem, a regret, a thing we wish we had said differently, or not said at all. That looking back can be useful. It tells you your values, it shows you how you want to choose and behave and love going forward. But it does not tell you the truth about the past, because it judges what you did then by everything you know now. You did not have now, back then. You had only what you had. So if there is something you are not proud of, do what love asks: make the amends, close the loop, ask for forgiveness. And then let yourself be forgiven, all the way, because you did not set out to cause harm. We are complicated, every one of us, and complicated is exactly right.
"You are doing everything right. In every moment, you are doing the very best you know how."
Three

Let the Message In

Now let the message actually reach you. Let it rise up from your body, and come down from your guides and the whole wide universe, and in from the people and the world around you. When a compliment comes, do not deflect it. Let it land. When validation arrives, from your guides or from someone who loves you, let yourself hear it, and savor it, and keep it. And listen to your body most of all, because your body has accepted you unconditionally through everything you have ever done to it, and you know that it has, because it is still here. You have the eyes to read this and the mind to take it in, and that is your body, loving you, right now.
Four

Relax Into a New Paradigm

So change your posture on the inside. Try on a new paradigm, one that says, moment to moment, day after day, I am doing everything right, and I can relax. You can relax. And when you do, something opens. Life stops being tainted by the constant low hum of worry, the doubt about whether people are judging you, whether you chose wrong, whether you should be doing something other than what you are doing. There are millions of choices, and every day you get to make one, and then another, and you get to point your time and your attention and your energy at whatever you truly value, with the chorus of you're doing everything right singing quietly behind you. And here is the gift inside the gift. Once you believe it about yourself, you begin to see that everyone else is doing everything right too. You set down the old baggage that said someone else's opinion of your life mattered more than you did. And you move forward, fearlessly, one step and then another, toward the beautiful life you can already picture.
Five

Let the Playful Part Come Out

And one last thing. There is a part of you that lights up at all of this, the playful, childlike, effervescent spark, the little sparkle of love-light that is inseparable from the divine, that is the divine, your eternal and unconditionally loving and thoroughly delighted self. It loves this message, and it wants to hear it again, and again, and again, and every time it does, it wakes up and wants to play. So make a little room this week. Go for a romp through the park. Play your favorite game. Throw a ball around, draw something, paint something, get on a swing. Do whatever makes you feel alive to the very tips of your toes, because in that laughter, in that bright-eyed, wide-open joy, you will feel it all the way through you: you are, in fact, doing everything right.

If you needed to hear this today, I am glad it found you. Tell me in the comments where you are ready to let yourself off the hook, and who in your long line of people you can feel cheering behind you. And send this to someone who has been far too hard on themselves.
